In short to my question, no, Last.fm Beta is not fit for consumers. In this letter I will be addressing my concerns with the latest Last.fm update, as you may know there has been notifications to test the beta Last.fm out, now all was fine, though the website was practically unpracticle, I was hoping that CBS Interactive would keep the "old" layout until at least the Last.fm we know and love was integrated into the new version, unfortunatly that is not the case.
So, what are the features that are missing? Many features, many great features we saw missing from the get go are not here.
Speaking from experience, my beautiful gif of 박규리 was missing and replaced with my logo, that doesn't seem to be an issue with other accounts, but that is something I have experienced, thankfully Google Web Cache came to save the day, since I created that gif myself and can't seem to make them anymore with Adobe Premiere Pro, that was a huge let down for me, but as I went to update my avatar, I was greeted with a message "Updating your avatar is currently disabled. Please check back later." how very strange that a basic function is gone, how saddening, though I know this will be back, since there is an appearance of an error message, this is just one key proof why Last.fm is currently not fit for consumers.
The shoutbox is firstly automatically disabled, that is one way I see Last.fm attempting to become a less social place, if this be the case, that was one of the main reasons why I joined Last.fm; to meet new people based on my music taste, then when I find the setting to enable it, you guessed it "Shouting is currently disabled. Please check back later."
Moving on, you can't join groups yet, it doesn't seem to let you, and when you view the groups, you get a glipse of the Last.fm you know and love, thank you Last.fm, I love this change so far, it is brilliant.
Updating your profile, is also disabled, they have a nice convenient "Updating your profile is currently disabled. Please check back later." message, more things to add to the list of disabled
Profile widgets seem to have gone, though some of them caused my Malware Bytes to flag, there were some good widgets and the issues were only occasional at best, my profile sure enough wasn't of any danger to users and I liked my widgets, there were many widgets designed with the Last.fm API, and now they are no longer around thanks to this one change.
The main issue is that adding friends has gone, how amazing is that, we no longer can make friends. More evidence that Last.fm may be moving to a more anti-social experiecne.
I think overall I like the new interface to some degree, I like the cleaner profile, but it didn't mean basic functions we love had to go away, the new UI reminds me of Myspace which I no longer use, let's hope that Last.fm doesn't turn that way. I did tweet last.fm hoping that they would make the beta version an option for new members and members who like the new version, all it would take is a URl like old.last.fm just like beta.last.fm.
Shelton Smith: "Nobody likes it, the shoutbox has been disabled, you can't update your avatar, the profile widgets gone, you can't make friends anymore, I hate the new version, I told last.fm on Twitter (they may not have seen it, but the tweet is there) it would be good if there was an option to stick to the old version, like old.last.fm or something, but no, they force the new version on us when it isn't fully functional." - http://bit.ly/1EyTous
Again I was hoping for more of our favourite features in the beta before it was forced upon us and I hope this doesn't become the end of Last.fm.
